CBD for Herniated Disk

As we go about our lives, our body begins to hurt and does not function quite like it used to. In many cases, these conditions can become chronic and affect everyday lives. One of these conditions can be having a herniated disk.

What is a Herniated Disk?
A herniated disk is a condition which is caused by rupture of the disc between the bones of the spine and the soft inner section of the disc (nucleus) protrudes outside through the hard outer ring (annulus). The nerve becomes inflamed and in pain as a result of the nerve being compressed. This can occur when the outer ring of the disc becomes weak or worn and results in the inner portion to herniate. Some of the symptoms patients can experience are the following: Pain in the back, arm, leg, and foot, Recurrent back muscle spasm, Numbness or tingling along thigh, Muscle weakness, Burning in the shoulders, neck or arm.

How common is this condition?
While not overly common, this condition can naturally occur from natural wear and tear over time. On very rare occasions, it can be caused by physical trauma from a blow to the back or falling.

On average, it can be caused from a few different things: Aging that can cause the spinal cord to lose their water content, making them less flexible and more prone to a tear or rupture with strain or twist, lifting heavy objects also makes you prone to wear and tear.

Additional risk factors include: Having excess weight that puts stress on lower back disks, physically tasking jobs that put extra strain on your back, and having a family history of herniated disks can also increase your chances of having this condition.

What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of cannabinoid, a chemical found naturally in cannabis (marijuana and hemp) plants. Early research is promising regarding the ability of CBD oil to help relieve anxiety. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another type of cannabinoid, CBD doesn’t cause any feelings of intoxication or the “high” you may associate with cannabis. CBD is also known for its ability to relieve stress and anxiety in the brain. Let’s talk about the human body and its many different receptors. CBD is thought to interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, respectively. These receptors are part of our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), this system in the brain is responsible for so many of our day-to-day functions. A few of these functions include mood, sleep, appetite, memory, etc. There is still a lot that is being discovered about this system in our bodies. What has been discovered is amazing. We all have this ECS in our systems, even if you haven’t had any form of cannabis in your system. When we are born, this system in our brains is in a form of homeostasis, though over time it can become unbalanced. That’s where CBD can come in to help. The endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor, the effects that result depend on where the receptor is located and which endocannabinoid it binds to. The CB1 receptors are located in the brain and throughout the body, while CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune and gastrointestinal system; although CB2 receptors are also found in the brain, they are not expressed quite as densely as CB1 receptors. We have another blog that goes deeper into this topic.

With CBD’s ability to help reduce pain and inflammation topically in the muscles, it’s usually seen as a really helpful alternative to regular pharmaceutical medications. The most recommended way to use CBD for aches and pains would be in a topical or cream form. When using a topical, it’s recommended to use a formula with CBD and CBG together or with Full Spectrum CBD/CBG. This is because CBG can be used for pain symptoms and to relax the body. When two cannabinoids are used together in a product, they help make each other more effective. Full Spectrum means that the formula has the legal limits of THC (0.3%), it’s not enough to cause any form of a psychoactive but does help with higher levels of pain and relaxing the body.

Regardless of how you would like to go about your treatment plan, we always recommend speaking to a health care specialist if you feel you have any serious/persistent symptoms. Here at AHS, we also have a nurse on staff who can help answer any additional questions. Our team
is trained in CBD and here to help make sure you get the best treatment we can provide.

CBD for Headaches

Headaches, it’s one of those things that we can experience frequently at any time, and at any age. It can happen for simple reasons and be mild, or it can happen in more severe conditions and be painful. In this article, we will talk about how CBD can help your headaches symptoms, so you can feel relief faster and more efficiently.

Headaches and cause:

Headaches are a condition where your head gets a feeling of pain or throbbing that can cause anywhere from mild discomfort, to major pain. This is determined by the type of headache you may have. There are Migraines, Cluster headaches, and Tension-type headaches. Here are a few ways that headaches can occur:

Food sensitivities: Food and drink release neurotransmitters, which can cause headaches in some people. Common food triggers include aspartame, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, and cheese to name a few.

Hormones: When estrogen levels drop (especially right before your period), you may be more likely to get a headache. Keep track of your cycle and plan when you can.

Posture: Your mom was right! Sit up straight to keep blood flowing (and move around when you can if you spend extended periods of time bent over a desk).

Lack of physical activity: Even though over-exertion can increase your risk for headaches, staying sedentary doesn’t help either. As with most things in life, moderation is key. Talk to your doctor before beginning or revising any exercise regimen.

Physical activity: Take it easy in the gym. Pushing too hard can result in an exertional headache from the swelling of blood vessels in your head, neck and scalp.

Medication: Some prescription medications may have the potential to trigger a headache. If you notice an increase, talk to your doctor.

Eating & sleeping patterns: Eat when you’re hungry. Sleep enough (not too much or too little), and don’t sleep in an odd position in a cold room – it can make your muscles spasm.

Noise: It’s not just loud, repetitive sounds. Even lower levels or continuous noise can hurt. Calming music and headphones may help.

Glare: Brightness from your computer screen, sunlight or overhead lights can make things painful. Turn them down and try adding a desk lamp.

Anxiety: Stress can take a toll on you. Breathe, relax, and take a stroll.

Cbd and how it helps:

CBD is one of the most well-known compounds in hemp and cannabis sativa plants. While delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) causes an intoxicatingly psychoactive high, CBD alone does not. CBD is a compound that helps reduce pain and inflammation in the body, as well as helps with anxiety and stress. This combination of benefits can help with headache prevention and recovery. When it comes to headaches, CBD can be used topically on your temples to help relax the tension and pain from the outside. When examining CBD alone, studies show that cannabinoids can be an effective treatment for chronic pain. CBD has been shown that it can lead to a reduction in migraine days and help decrease the impact of migraines. Beyond pain relief, CBD may help reduce nausea and inflammation often associated with migraines.

With whatever treatment you choose, if your symptoms persist or get worse, please contact a health care professional to help you with your treatment.

For those who are familiar with hemp and CBD, both may seem very similar, each being close to each other in most forms. The short answer to this question is no. CBD and Hemp products are not the same. If that’s the case, what makes them so different? In this blog, we will look into what both are in more detail and see their similarities and differences.

Let’s start with CBD. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant known for its potential therapeutic effects. CBD reduces pain and inflammation to relieve the symptoms of diverticulitis. Instead of attaching to receptors like most cannabinoids, CBD enhances other parts of the system. Then there is Hemp. Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a plant class of Cannabis sativa cultivars grown specifically for industrial or medicinal use. It can be used to make a wide range of products. Along with bamboo, hemp is among the fastest growing plants on Earth. Hemp oils and CBD oil are very different plants. CBD uses the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the hemp plant in its construction. These contain higher concentrations of CBD, which is a mixture with numerous health benefits. Meanwhile,
hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. The biggest difference between hemp oil vs CBD oil, is that hemp oil has little to no CBD content. Hemp Oil is made by cold-pressing the hemp seeds into an omega-rich culinary oil. CBD oil is made by isolating the compound CBD from the leaves, flowers, and stalks of a hemp plant.

While people do not use hemp seed oil for recreational use, this being because of the limited or non- existent CBD and THC in it, this product is still used for other things too. It is also used in nutritional supplements because of its high Omega-3 and Omega-6, fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid, and nutritious antioxidant contents. Though not guaranteed, Hemp oil has also been shown to have additional benefits. Including, but not limited to; relieving constipation, providing cardiovascular health benefits, modifying the immune system, improving skin conditions, improving gastrointestinal conditions. Consuming hemp seed oil is safe for anyone. However, it may not provide any benefit for cardiovascular health, as some people believe. Some consumers also report digestive issues, but these effects may not occur in everyone.

With CBD oil, there are a few different kinds on the market. Such as full-spectrum, which contains all compounds of the cannabis plant, including THC (but at exceptionally low levels.) Broad-spectrum, which contains several compounds of the cannabis plant, but not THC. And CBD isolate, which contains pure CBD, generally is the purest form of CBD. CBD is known for its medicinal properties and is used for many different conditions. Such conditions being; anxiety and depression, inflammation of the skin or internal organs, addiction management, epilepsy, neurodegenerative conditions, and more! (you can learn more through other blogs on our website.) Though CBD may not be able to cure these conditions, it can be used to improve your quality of life and make these conditions easier to handle.

A person can use hemp oil to relieve inflammation pain. Many people use hemp or CBD oil as a form of natural pain relief, especially if the pain is a result of inflammation. Those who do not want to take over- the-counter, or prescription pain medications may turn to a high-quality hemp oil for relief. Both CBD oil and hemp seed oil have numerous potential health benefits, but because research is limited, scientists are continuing to study them. At AHS, we have specialists and a nurse on staff who can answer any questions you may have on CBD, Hemp, a condition you may have, or any other product we carry in our store. Always consult one of our specialists or your doctor if you’re on medication and would like to try CBD.

Hip dysplasia is most common in dwarf, large, and giant purebred dogs, although mixed breeds are certainly not immune. According to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), Bulldogs and Pugs have the highest rates of hip dysplasia at 72.6% and 64.3%.

Hip dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket thatcan eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. Hip dysplasia is characterized by weakness or lameness in the hind end, limping or favoring one rear leg over another, reduced energy levels, lack of interest in play or exercise, stiff or swaying gait, “Bunny hopping” when running, difficulty getting up from a sitting or lying position, loss of muscle mass in the thigh, pain in the hip area when touched, “Clicking” sound in the hips when walking and trouble running, jumping or climbing stairs.

Treatment for hip dysplasia in pets includes exercise, joint supplements, acupuncture, laser therapy, stem cell treatment, surgery and prescribed medication. Medications used to treat hip dysplasia include Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).

While this class of pharmaceuticals is excellent for reducing painful inflammation in the hips they also contain negative side effects that include vomiting, loss of appetite, depression, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, liver failure, kidney failure, and even death can occur in certain cases.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant known for its potential therapeutic effects. CBD works by interacting with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is made up of specialized receptors throughout the nervous system and body.

CBD helps address imbalances throughout the immune system and organs to prevent and alleviate chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, altered sleep patterns, digestive problems, and more. Since hip dysplasia is an inflammatory condition, many vets prescribe NSAIDs to their patients. However, CBD has shown to be a safer, more natural alternative.

CBD is a powerful, natural anti-inflammatory that may help with hip dysplasia without the harmful side effects that come with prescribed medications. CBD interacts with receptors in the brain to influence the way your dog processes pain signals. Studies regarding CBD and chronic pain have proven so effective, some researchers consider it a whole new class of pain reliever.

There are a few CBD products that could help your canine companion with their hip dysplasia. If the pain level is 1-5 small dogs can take Bailey’s 300mg Tincture and larger breeds can take Bailey’s 600mg Tincture.

If the pain level is 6-10 your pet can take our AHS 500mg Pet Tincture. CBD infused dog treats in 3-5 mg can also help with the pain and inflammation caused by hip dysplasia.

Always consult your veterinarian before starting your furry friend on a new treatment.

Our team of specialists are always available to provide you with education and assist you with any questions regarding CBD.

What is heart disease?

Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, typically refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as those that affect your heart’s muscle, valves or rhythm, also are considered forms of heart disease. Symptoms may include fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, swollen feet or ankles, fainting, or chest pain. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US.

The cardiovascular system plays a vital physiological role in the body. Comprising the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, this system is responsible for the critical task of transporting nutrients, hormones, and oxygen to cells via the bloodstream. It also disposes of waste products, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogenous waste via the same mechanisms. So this makes it critical that we keep our cardiovascular system in as good of health as we possibly can.

How can CBD help with heart disease?

Among other things, inflammation of the heart can cause cardiovascular cells to become damaged or even die. This can be brought on by certain diseases, viruses, medications, or even an autoimmune attack. If inflammation isn’t treated, it could result in death.

CBD is well-known for its potential to reduce harmful inflammation. The 2-AG endocannabinoid binds to the CB2 receptor, and this causes the immune system to send out less immune cells to attack. Also, CBD has proven to reduce the number of cells that die in the heart during inflammation. This helps your heart muscle hold onto its strength.

One of the cardiovascular benefits of CBD is its ability to reduce resting blood pressure, as well as blood pressure when faced with stressful stimuli. A study published within the “JCL Insight”in 2017, investigated the blood pressure-lowering effects of CBD on humans. Nine healthy male volunteers participated in the study and were either given 600mg of CBD or a placebo.

The results showed that CBD reduced resting systolic blood pressure (the maximum arterial blood pressure during heart contraction) and reduced stroke volume (volume of blood pumped per beat). These results have important implications considering that high blood pressure is a contributing factor to ischemic heart disease.

There are many different reasons why people turn to CBD. Some people use CBD for better sleep, to ease stress and anxiety, heal digestive systems issues, alleviate depression.. the list can go on and on. Almost every illness or sickness is rooted in the source that our body is dealing with some sort of inflammation. Whether that be an inflammation in the brain causing misfire serotonin or dopamine causing things like anxiety or depression, or chronic inflammation in a muscle joint. As humans, we are constantly fueling our bodies with new foods, trying new workouts, changing sleeping routines, and coping with new emotions. It is only normal that the body can easily get “out of balance” from these constantly changing external factors.

CBD is so healing for many different issues in the body because it helps bring the body to “homeostasis”. Homeostasis is defined as the dynamic state of equilibrium of internal physical and chemical conditions, aka your body function “in balance”.

What is homeostasis in the body?

Maintaining homeostasis is the key to well-functioning, healthy body. Factors internally that contribute to this are:

Glucose levels

Stomach PH levels

Production of serotonin

Blood pressure

Respiratory rate

Hormone Production

Muscle Recovery

How CBD can help maintain Homeostasis:

Scientists only recently discovered our bodies naturally create cannabinoids to help reduce inflammation, unhealthy cell growth, and nerve dysfunction. Cannabinoids are produced by the human body as well as by the hemp plant. In the body, they are called endocannabinoids, where they work in a kind of “lock and key” relationship with the body’s natural Endocannabinoid system, a physiological system present in all mammals to regulate homeostatic processes. In the hemp plant, we get the cannabinoids from what is called phytocannabinoids.

CBD we consume, affects the endocannabinoids system (ECS) that the system controls and helps pain management, inflammation, immune response, appetite, metabolism, memory, mood, emotions, and more. By feeding the body with cannabinoids, it aids in naturally building the system stronger and more powerful to reach homeostasis on a regular basis. This is why taking CBD on a regime routine is so important, that way you work in partnership with your body to become stronger.

Disease and Conditions caused by homeostasis:

Diabetes

Hypo/hyper Gylcemia

High Blood Pressure

Obesity

Arthritis

Osteoporosis

Thyroid Disorders

Endocrine

Crohn’s Disease

Depression

Fibromyalgia

Lupus

Just to name a few!

“How do I take my CBD oil?”

A common question we often get asked is…

The entire process of taking CBD for your health should feel good. You are choosing to take action to improve your wellness in your life. Cannabinoid (CBD) consumption works to create homeostasis (equilibrium) in your body.

We recommend what we call Sublingual consumption. We recommend sublingual because this will allow the CBD oil to be absorbed into your mucous membranes rather than processing through your body’s digestive tract. This will allow higher efficacy and potency of the health benefits CBD provides.

When taking CBD we always recommend starting with a smaller dose and slowly adjusting your dosage to find a sweet spot. Everyone’s body is different, it is our job at A Healthy Solution Wellness, to help you find the amount that works best with you. So here’s what you do:

Shake the bottle well.

Use dropper/syringe to drop under tongue and hold for a few seconds. The more it tastes like the earth the more natural it is!

Use these few seconds to let the CBD adsorb under your tongue. Take this time to slow down for just a moment. Often our mental state and emotions are one of the most influential factors of our health. By taking CBD, you have taken a step to improve your overall wellness. So manifest it! Disconnect from the everyday hustle and bustle and focus on the health benefits you hope to reap by incorporating CBD into your daily diet.

Repeat as needed. We typically recommend a dose in the morning, and a larger dose before bed. It is best if consumed on 12 hour increments.

Smile and feel alive :)

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a Cannabidiol compound that has been found to provide a wide range of potential health benefits for humans. CBD has fewer psychoactive elements than THC, offering more of a “body high” that may improve your sleep, relax your body, and help with your overall health and well-being. Recent studies suggest that these benefits may extend to pets as well. From supporting a better mood to assisting in pain management, CBD offers a vast array of potential benefits for all kinds of animals.

We recently spoke with Julianna Carella, the founder, and CEO of Treatibles, to learn more about CBD and its potential effect on pets. Treatibles was established in 2013 and became the first company to create phytocannabinoid-rich, hemp-oil-infused treats for pets. The brand continues to thrive today thanks to its commitment to transparency and educating customers.

What do pet owners need to know about CBD?

As many states have begun legalizing the use of medical Cannabidiol, many people have become confused about medical Cannabidiol and hemp, their benefits, and their safety. While the two are related, they come with distinctly different effects in both humans and animals.

“Although Cannabidiol and hemp are from the same plant genus, Cannabaceae, they are two different plants,” says Carella. “They do produce many of the same beneficial phytocannabinoids, but there is a very important distinction—hemp-derived phytocannabinoids do not include psychoactive compounds and do not cause the high associated with Cannabidiol.”

In fact, hemp is classified as containing less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the psychoactive component that exists in medical Cannabidiol. All animals (including humans) have naturally occurring THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids in their bodies. Endocannabinoid systems use these compounds to maintain various physiological, immunological, and neurological components. If the endocannabinoid system detects deficiencies in cannabinoid production, the body turns to phytocannabinoids, which are cannabinoid compounds found in plants, to rebalance the system. For that reason, naturally occurring phytocannabinoids become important to the health of all animals. Hemp-based phytocannabinoids, thankfully, are legal in all 50 states.

However, according to Carella, not all PCR- (phytocannabinoid-rich) infused products derived from hemp are created equal. Much of the quality and potential effects come down to sourcing, extraction methods, and the testing of raw materials.

Carella says, “For example, at Treatibles our PCR oil is extracted from whole-plant medicinal-grade hemp grown in the USA. We utilize a CO2 extraction method to ensure the purest, most effective oil. In addition to several therapeutic phytocannabinoids, terpenes are included, creating what is known as the entourage effect, providing a full spectrum of benefits for pets.”

Treatibles also tests all of its products via third-party labs through every stage of production. These third-party labs also test for the presence of heavy metals and bio-contaminants. Treatibles is the only brand in the market of PCR for pets that measures the exact milligrams that go into every chew, gel capsule, and dropper. Most importantly, Treatibles maintains full transparency about its products. The company shares all of its lab test results with its customers via its website.

What are the benefits of CBD for pets?

CBD from phytocannabinoids may offer a variety of health benefits, according to Carella. Mainly, phytocannabinoids may offer calming, soothing effects and balance your pet’s health and well-being. Phytocannabinoids may also be used to promote good digestion and joint health.

CBD may also help pets with:

General anxiety

Separation anxiety

Pain management

Nausea

Loss of appetite

Seizures

Side effects from cancer and cancer treatments

End-of-life comfort

What are the possible side effects?

Any good pet owner probably worries about potential side effects from new medications or supplements, and rightfully so. However, Carella has yet to receive any reports of adverse side effects from CBD in all her years of producing Treatibles.

Carella says, “Hemp-based phytocannabinoids are non-psychoactive and non-toxic. It is virtually impossible for a pet to overdose. Medical Cannabidiol-based phytocannabinoids contain THC, which in small doses can be beneficial for some pets. However, too much THC can cause an overdose, static ataxia, and other severe reactions. Always work with a veterinarian well-versed in cannabinoid science who can instruct on dosage.”

Treatibles has also consulted with veterinarians who state that phytocannabinoids are safe for pets to use with other prescribed or over-the-counter medications. That said, Carella and we at Healthy Hemp Oil suggest that pet owners talk to their vets before incorporating any new supplements, CBD or otherwise, into their pets’ diets.

What are the best ways to administer CBD?

CBD oils on their own are not particularly palatable for pets, but they are the easiest means of measuring out how much CBD your pet actually gets. If you do use CBD oils, mix them with a carrier oil, like coconut oil, or infuse them into tasty chews to make the oil more appealing. You can also use CBD pet tinctures to easily give your pets small servings of CBD.

Are there any animals that should never take CBD?

All available studies show that, when administered properly, CBD is safe for pets to use without any worries of harmful or life-threatening effects. When asked if there were any animals that shouldn’t use CBD, Carella put it simply: “If there are, we haven’t run into them yet.”

Healthy Hemp Oil offers a wide range of CBD products that may support better health for humans and pets alike. Supported by a team of cannabinoid experts, we hope to educate you and provide you with products that have been tested to ensure effectiveness and peace of mind.
