Are you going through menopause? As women age, our bodies go through many changes. It feels like a second puberty with menopause and everything that comes with it. It can be a challenge trying to know what to expect. In today’s article, we will be going over one of the conditions you may experience during menopause, how to spot it, and what you can do for treatment.

What is it?
Vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) is thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls that can arise when your body has less estrogen. Vaginal atrophy occurs most frequently after menopause, or pre-menopause. For many women, vaginal atrophy not only makes
intercourse more uncomfortable, but also leads to distressful urinary symptoms. Because the situation causes both vaginal and urinary symptoms, doctors use the term “genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)” to describe vaginal atrophy and its additional symptoms. Reduced estrogen levels result in changes to your body, but it doesn’t mean you have to live with the worrying symptoms of GSM.

What are some of the symptoms?
Usually, a healthcare provider can diagnose vaginal atrophy based on your symptoms and a pelvic exam to look at your vagina and cervix. Classic signs of atrophy during a pelvic exam include: A shortened or narrowed vagina, Dryness, redness and swelling, Loss of stretchiness, whitish discoloration to your vagina, Vulvar skin conditions, vulvar lesions and/or vulvar patch redness, Minor cuts (lacerations) near your vaginal opening, & decrease in size of the labia.

What can cause it?
Women in menopause/pre-menopause are at a higher risk for vaginal atrophy, because their body is creating less estrogen. There are also other causes and situations that lead to vaginal atrophy as well, including the following: Decreased ovarian functioning due to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, Medications that contain antiestrogen properties including tamoxifen, medroxyprogesterone and nafarelin, Oophorectomy (removal of your ovaries), Some birth control pills, Immune disorders, Breastfeeding (chest feeding), Smoking cigarettes, etc.
While healthcare providers typically rely on examinations to diagnose atrophic changes or GSM, they may do the following tests to rule out other conditions: Pap test, Urine sample, Ultrasound, Vaginal pH (acid test),Vaginal infection testing.

What can I do to prevent or lessen symptoms?
Have no fear, there are many ways to treat this condition! One of the things that can help with reducing symptoms/helps prevent this condition is sexual activity. Activity, with or without a partner, can lead to more mild cases later in life. This is because sex/sexual stimulation increases blood flow to the vagina, allowing the vaginal tissue to be more elastic. There is also vaginal estrogen, which has the benefit of
being efficient at lower doses and reducing your overall exposure to estrogen, because less reaches your bloodstream. It may also provide better direct relief of symptoms than oral estrogen does. Vaginal estrogen therapy comes in a number of forms. Because they all seem to work equally well, you and your doctor can decide which one is best for you. There are also additional treatments if the lack of estrogen comes from cancer/cancer treatments. In consultation with your cancer specialist (oncologist), your doctor might recommend low-dose vaginal estrogen if nonhormonal treatments don’t help your symptoms. However, there’s some concern that vaginal estrogen might increase your risk of the cancer coming back, especially if your breast cancer was hormonally sensitive. Systemic estrogen treatment generally isn’t recommended, especially if your breast cancer was hormonally sensitive.

While these are a few potential treatment plans; we recommend speaking to your OB/GYN or your doctor to find the solution that works best for you and your body.

There are many different types of mushrooms out in the world. But not everyone knows what they do or where to start with their research. In this article, we will try to break down the information on a few types of mushrooms out in the world and help you learn more about what is out there and what you may want to ingest. Benefits of Mushrooms: It can be used for depression, OCD, Smoking/Addiction, Alcohol, Cluster headaches, Anxiety, Inflammation, and Brain cell rejuvenation. There are no guarantees of the results, there have been many cases shown where mushrooms can help.

Let’s go into a short summary for the mushrooms featured today: Psilocybe cubensis, or “cubes,” are the most common type of psychedelic mushroom. And penis envy mushrooms are one of the most popular strains of cubes. But albino penis envy mushrooms are giving their pigment-having cousins a run for their money. Cubensis is one species but consists of numerous strains. It’s kind of like how there are
different breeds of dogs: all the same species, but with different traits. Among these cube strains, the Albino Penis Envy (APE) stands out. APEs are not just a quirky name in the cubensis world; they’re a symbol of potency, peculiarity, and a certain mystique. APEs are renowned for their high psilocybin content. There are numerous accounts of individuals consuming a mere gram or two and experiencing profound, intense trips. This elevated potency might be due to their hybrid nature, a fusion between the Penis Envy and the PF Albino strains of Psilocybe cubensis.

Let’s go into a little more detail on each one to get a better understanding on what these all are.

Amanita Mushroom (in our Kruz gummies)
Americans looking for a legal alternative to psychedelic mushrooms have set their sights on amanita muscaria. It’s quickly gaining a reputation as the delta-8 of shrooms: Psychoactive but not outlawed. The firetruck-red mushroom doesn’t contain psilocybin, but instead a different psychoactive compound called muscimol. Experts say that muscimol tends to elicit less hallucinatory effects than the psilocybin
and psilocin in other entheogenic mushrooms. Amanita mushrooms affect the GABA neurotransmitters in the brain. The mushrooms contain ibotenic acid and muscimol, which perform similar actions in the central nervous system as GABA receptors when introduced from an outside source. This directly leads to telltale effects, such as changes in perception (hallucinations) and sedation. By this definition,
amanita muscaria mushrooms are undeniably psychedelic. After all, mushrooms are said to cause changes in visual, spatial, time, and auditory perception are possible, and the mushrooms can definitely put you into a more tranquil frame of mind. However, by formal definitions in medical literature, amanita mushrooms are not always considered psychedelic because of their mechanism of action.

Psilocybin
Psilocybin works by activating serotonin receptors, most often in the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain affects mood, cognition, and perception. Hallucinogens also work in other regions of the brain that regulate arousal and panic responses. Psilocybin does not always cause active visual or auditory hallucinations. Instead, it distorts how some people who use this product perceive objects and people already in their environment. The quantity of the product a person consumes, their past experiences, and their expectations of how the experience will take shape can all impact the effects of psilocybin. Psilocybin can reduce activity in the default mode network of the brain, which can be described as the brain’s “inner narrator that’s telling you you’re not good enough, you need to work harder, and you’re not loved.” As a result, it tames the negative thoughts that often run in the background during depression. It has been shown that psilocybin microdosing to be associated with improvements in mood and mental health, which adds to the growing body of research that suggests positive benefits of
microdosing specifically in the domains of mental health and cognition. When mushrooms are microdosed (each type has to be dosed differently), they can be beneficial to mental health, and you can skip that stereotypical “trip” that most people talk about.

According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), the hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin usually occur within 30 minutes after a person ingests it and last 4–6 hours.

Penis Envy Mushroom (in our MK Chocolate Bars)
Penis envy mushrooms are a variety of mushrooms that contain the psychedelic compound psilocybin. When someone consumes penis envy mushrooms, they may experience perceptual changes, altered thinking processes, and spiritual experiences known as a “trip.” Despite their potential benefits, people should consider that psychedelic mushrooms are potent substances that can cause intense experiences, both positive and negative. Typically, higher than most other P. cubensis strains. Contains more psilocybin and psilocin. Strong visual hallucinations, enhanced colors, altered perception of time, introspection, emotional intensification. Generally, lasts 4-6 hours, but can vary based on dosage and individual metabolism. One of the most popular strains is due to its high potency and unique appearance.

Apes (in our MK Mints & Gummies)
Generally considered even more potent than standard PE, making them among the most potent of the P. cubensis strains. Similar to PE but might be more intense due to higher potency. Users often report deeper introspection and more vivid visual experiences. Similar to PE. The duration is typically 4-6 hours, but the intensity might be stronger especially in the onset. Growing in popularity, especially among those who seek more intense psychedelic experiences.

Always be careful when trying mushrooms or other brain altering products and ask a professional on what they can recommend for you or what to expect from said product.

Here is our recommendation for dosing if you choose to try any of these mushrooms (dosing can very depending on strength)

Micro Dose: 0.1-0.5 Grams. Standard for therapeutic treatment. A micro dose isn’t enough to create a “high” or “visuals.”

Low Dose: 1-1.5 Grams. Low shroom dosage, but still produces some effects such as euphoria and enhancement of some to all senses.

Moderate-High Dose: 1.75-3.5 Grams. Known to produce med-high hallucinogenic effects (visual an sensory.) At higher end of spectrum, it will produce mind blowing effects and synesthesia (blending of the senses.)

Ultimate Dose: 4-5 Grams. The “Heroic Shroom Trip” dosage. Typically will bring the full depth of a shroom trip experience. Loss of reality.

We all have had trouble sleeping at least a few times in our lives. The cause could be almost anything, maybe you have an exciting book you don’t want to put down, maybe a really good T.V. show that’s just getting to the good part, or you’ve been extremely stressed out and your mind is racing, or maybe you have insomnia, and your brain won’t let you sleep no matter what you do. Whatever the reason, a lack of sleep can affect your body in many different ways, some more obvious than others. There are many different ways to get around the issue as well, though some are better than others. Let’s discuss what a lack of sleep can do to your body, what the potential solutions are, and what minerals you can take to help you sleep better.

Let’s start this discussion with what a lack of sleep can do to your body. In a short term case, the effects won’t harm you long term. Though you will likely feel much more groggy, moody, or even fatigued. Though for long term cases for a lack of sleep, those effects may be more dangerous. According to research, a lack of sleep can cause a few different problems for the body. Such as a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, risk for diabetes, risk of heart disease, mood changes, memory issues, trouble with thinking and concentration, etc. Long term, this can become detrimental to your quality of life and have lifelong consequences if you aren’t careful. Though these conditions are NOT guaranteed to happen, you have a much higher chance than someone who gets the proper amount of sleep. So what can be done to combat this problem? And how much sleep should I be getting?

There are a few different methods that people use to fight against this issue. Some can use sleeping pills, melatonin, CBN (the cannabinoid for sleep), though each one has their level of effectiveness. Though they can have their side effects, for example, if you take melatonin consistently, your body can build a tolerance to it after two years! When taking prescription sleeping pills over a long period of time, your body grows accustomed to the drug, and you need higher and higher doses to get the same sleep- inducing effect, just like melatonin. But, if you take a high enough dose, this could lead to depressed breathing while you sleep, which can cause death. So always be careful of that. We also have a blog on our website discussing the effects of CBN in your body, and how it helps with sleep in more detail. That compound being a safer option.

Generally, the amount of sleep you need depends on your age. Generally, this is the amount of sleep each age group needs:

Teens 13-18 need about 8-10 hours of sleep per 24 hours

Adults 18-60 need about 7 or more hours per night

Older adults, 65+ years need about 7 to 8 hours per night

So, what is an alternative method to getting better sleep? In this blog, we will be discussing how certain minerals can be used to help with sleep and keeping your body healthier. Today, we will be discussing Magnesium and Calcium specifically and how they interact with your body.

Calcium
Calcium is directly linked to our cycles of sleep. In one study, published in the European Neurology Journal, researchers discovered that calcium levels in the body are greater during some of the deepest levels of sleep, such as the rapid eye movement (REM) phase. The study determined that disturbances in sleep, especially the absence of REM deep sleep or disturbed REM sleep, are related to a calcium deficiency. Return to the normal course of sleep was attained after the stabilization of the blood calcium level. Calcium supports the brain use the amino acid tryptophan to manufacture the sleep-inducing substance melatonin. This explains why dairy products, which contain both tryptophan and calcium, are one of the top sleep-inducing foods.

Magnesium
In magnesium deficiency, chronic insomnia is one of the major, significant symptoms. Sleep is usually disturbed with frequent nighttime awakenings. On the other hand, a high magnesium, low aluminum diet has been shown to be correlated with deeper, less interrupted sleep. This was demonstrated in a study done by James Penland at the Human Nutrition Research Center in North Dakota. The study was titled “Effects of trace element nutrition on sleep patterns in adult women.” It’s crucial to note that a reasonable ratio of calcium and magnesium is important to overall health, and these two minerals should be taken together for best results. Magnesium is also able to help the body relax. This nutrient reduces stress and helps you sleep longer. You can get your needed dose of calcium and/or magnesium through supplements or through your day to day diet. Some more minerals that can be used for your health include Iron, Vitamin D, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Potassium, and even Chamomile (usually found it teas). These are a good way to continue helping your body sleep and will keep you healthier overall.

Depending on how you want to go about your treatment, there will always be options available to you no matter how hard it may be to sleep. If you are truly concerned with your health, make sure to check in with a medical professional.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non psychoactive compound derived from the Cannabis plant known for its potential therapeutic effects. There is a negative stigma surrounding CBD and what it is used for. I am going to talk about and debunk 5 common myths about CBD.

1. CBD Will Make You High.
a. This is the most common misconception about CBD. The substance that can cause the psychoactive or “high” feeling is THC. CBD is a non psychoactive and will not produce a high unless the label on the product has THC in it as well.

2. All CBD is the Same
a. As with almost any product on the market, CBD products can vary greatly between companies and products. Some plants naturally contain more CBD than others. Where the plants are grown can also affect their content and their potency. There are also products that use only single isolated CBD from the plant. Other companies may utilize the entire plant to provide the CBD and other beneficial terpenes in the product. There are also varying concentrations of CBD in every oil, tincture, and even edible. It is important to research a product before purchasing to ensure that it is exactly what is wanted.

3. CBD is Addictive
a. There is no evidence that CBD is addictive in any way. No one has ever become addicted to CBD. There is no mechanism in the body that creates the addiction process seen in other substances. There is evidence that shows that CBD may block the addictive effects of some painkillers by reducing the pleasure the body feels when taking such medications.

4. CBD Cannot Show Up in a Drug Test
a. Even CBD derived completely from hemp plants could still have trace amounts of THC present. This amount must be less than 0.3% to be legal in the US. However, this trace amount could show up in a urinalysis. If a person works at a company that performs regular drug testing, it may be a good idea to let your boss know you are on a CBD regimen or only take low doses of CBD. Since they utilize the entire plant to make the product, the products may still contain trace amounts of THC. Using single-compound CBD will be less likely to contain the trace amounts. There is also the CBD Isolate that can be a good choice if you want a CBD alternative that you can guarantee won’t be on a drug test. CBD isolate is a form of CBD, or cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound present in the cannabis plant. Unlike full-spectrum CBD products, CBD isolate does not contain any THC — the psychoactive component of cannabis. Studies suggests that while CBD isolate does offer certain health benefits, some of these may have less effect than those gained from using a full-spectrum CBD product. Though you are 100% guaranteed to not have any concerns for a drug test.

5. CBD Hasn’t Been Scientifically Proven to Help Any Health Conditions
a. There is a myth that CBD has not been scientifically proven to help any health conditions. And it is often said that its benefits are vague, but this isn’t true. There are certain health conditions that have been scientifically proven to be benefited by CBD. For example, the FDA approved a CBD-based medication to help treat seizure disorders that has been shown to be effective. There are also studies showing its effective for pain reduction, anxiety, insomnia, etc.

Overall, CBD is still a new medical treatment in the modern day but is safer to use than you may think. Why not give it a try? At AHS we have trained team and a nurse on staff to help answer any questions that you may have about CBD and what may work best for you and your body.

Our bodies are very complicated systems of different bits and pieces, each having different ways of responding to the world around it. Some more able to fight off illness, some, not as much. We’ve also always heard how there are different vitamins and minerals that can help boost our immune systems to keep us safer, but what works best? The shortest answer would be that it depends on the person and what their body needs. In this blog we’re going to talk about: vitamin D, vitamin C, Zinc, and elderberry. We’re going to dig into what each item brings to the table and how they can improve your day-to-day life.

Let’s start with Vitamin D. This vitamin is known as one of the most significant immune system strengthening nutrients that can decrease the risk of colds and flus. Though it’s usually known for its capability to strengthen our bones and add more calcium into our bodies. As the vitamin D receptor is expressed on immune cells (B cells, T cells and antigen presenting cells) and these immunologic cells are
all are capable of producing the active vitamin D metabolite, vitamin D has the ability of acting in an autocrine manner in a local immunologic milieu. Vitamin D can modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses. Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as an increased sensitivity to infection. As immune cells in autoimmune diseases are responsive to the ameliorative effects of vitamin D, the beneficial effects of supplementing vitamin D deficient people with autoimmune disease may extend beyond the effects on bone and calcium homeostasis. There are foods you can eat that naturally put this vitamin into your system, those foods include: fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon, or dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals, beef liver, cheese, egg
yolks, etc.

Now on to Vitamin C, it’s importance to the body and how it can improve your life. This vitamin is known for boosting our immune systems by supporting the production of white blood cells that help fight off infections. Because your body isn’t naturally able to make Vitamin C on its own, it has to come from the foods you eat every day. Research shows vitamin C is essential for the growth and repair of tissue all over the body. Vitamin C helps heal wounds and repair and sustain healthy bones, teeth, skin and cartilage, a type of firm tissue that covers the bones. As an antioxidant, vitamin C fights free radicals in the body which may help prevent or delay certain cancers and heart disease and promote healthy aging. Vitamin C from foods also seems to reduce the risk of cartilage loss in those with osteoarthritis. Though it may not keep you from catching a cold, there is some evidence that high doses of vitamin C may decrease the length of cold symptoms by as much as one to one-and-a-half days for some people. Sources of vitamin C are reach well beyond the ever-popular orange or orange juice. Many fruits and vegetables supply this vital vitamin. Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, green and red bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and kiwifruit, among others. You can enjoy these foods raw or cooked, but it’s important to note that fruits and vegetables lose vitamin C when heated or stored for long periods of time. To get the most nutrients, eat them as soon as possible after shopping and consider steaming or microwaving vegetables for short periods of time to limit nutrient loss.

Next up, we have Zinc! Zinc is found in cells throughout the body. It helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses. The body also needs zinc to make proteins and DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Scientists determined in human cell culture and animal studies that a protein lures zinc into key cells that are first responders against infection. The zinc then interacts with a process that is vital to the fight against infection and by doing so helps balance the immune response. It can also help reduce symptoms of COVID-19. While there is no current cure to this illness, there are ways to help prevent it from affecting you, such as the COVID-19 vaccine. But if that isn’t the route you want to take or want to use something more to help you stay immune, this could be a good choice. At the moment there are few good quality trials examining the role that zinc supplements or low zinc levels have in COVID-19 which means we need to review good quality research that looks at zinc in other conditions as well. A Cochrane review of 18 studies found zinc lozenges (at least 75mg/day) administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms reduced the duration of cold symptoms in healthy people. They could not make a recommendation regarding whether zinc supplementation reduced the risk of developing a cold. Zinc gluconate (13.3mg) reduced the symptoms of a common cold by more than three days in 100 employees in Cleveland. Zinc was shown to inhibit the activity and replication of another coronavirus
(SARS-CoV which caused an outbreak in 2002) in the laboratory. Low zinc levels were associated with a poorer outcome in people admitted to a hospital in Spain with Covid-19.

And finally, elderberry! The berries and flowers of elderberry are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system. They could help tame inflammation, lessen stress, and help protect your heart, too. Some experts recommend elderberry to help prevent and ease cold and flu symptoms. What’s nice about this plant is that it’s high in vitamin C, high in dietary fiber, a good source
of phenolic acids, a good source of flavonols, and rich in anthocyanins. Though how much the berries have in them can depend on the variety of the plant, the ripeness of the berries, and the environmental/climatic conditions. Elderberry extract has been shown to reduce the length and severity of symptoms caused by the influenza virus. While the results are promising, further large-scale human studies are needed. Elderberry fruits, leaves, and flowers are strong in antioxidants. However, their protective effects on humans appear to be insignificant. Additionally, the processing of the berries and flowers can reduce their antioxidant activity. Elderberry has some benefits for heart health, such as reducing cholesterol, uric acid, and blood sugar levels. However, further research is needed to demonstrate if these effects are significant in humans. Though these benefits seem great, uncooked berries, leaves, bark, and roots of the elderberry plant contain the chemicals lectin and cyanide, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Cooking the berries and seeds will remove the cyanide. So be
careful while ingesting this plant before cooking.

In conclusion, all of these vitamins have many different healing benefits for the body. Always consult your doctor before trying any new medical treatments.

For centuries, mushrooms have been trusted functional foods for supporting health and contributing to overall wellness. These functional mushrooms are outstanding for their beta-glucan content, a significant prebiotic that feeds good bacteria and initiates health benefits throughout our body- including our brain and our immune system. An imbalance in our micro biome can have a negative influence on our gut health that can ripple throughout our body.

The micro biome is the genetic material of all the microbes – bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses – that live on and inside the human body. Medicinal mushrooms are known for their ability to act as adaptogens, which support your adrenal glands and help you adapt, manage stress, and keep the body in balance.

However, the benefits of mushrooms are far more wide-reaching than just stress. Mushrooms can impact the immune system by acting as an immune booster, and in others down regulating an overactive immune system. They can help calm anxiety, boost mental focus, help provide energy for a workout and even have disease-fighting properties. Some varieties of mushrooms may also support liver health.

Mushrooms have shown to strengthen the immune system by acting as a prebiotic, or food for beneficial bacteria in the gut, thereby supporting a healthy micro biome. Cell walls of fungus contain compounds called beta-glucans, and it is those powerful compounds that have prebiotic properties.

Eidon’s Super Biome Mushroom Extract Powder contains 8 powerful mushrooms to help keep your body in balance.

Reishi is the most famous of all medicinal mushrooms, known as the Mushroom of Immortality. It enhances the body’s ability to adapt to stress and promotes overall wellness support.

Chaga is a free radical powerhouse and acts as an immune support.

Lion’s Mane optimizes the gut, nervous system, and immune system health. Lion’s Mane also has shown to improve cognitive functioning. Shiitake mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is a super food that contains vitamin D, vitamin B, and many other minerals.

Maitake promotes healthy and balanced blood sugar, and overall immune support.

Cordyceps supports energy and stamina, and augments oxygen uptake.

Turkey Tail supports immune and digestive health. Lastly,

Mesima enhances our immune system’s natural defenses. Eidon’s Super Biome Mushroom Extract Powder can be taken once daily by adding one scoop to your choice of juice, coffee, or a smoothie.

Always consult your primary care physician before starting a new regimen.

Our team of specialists are always available to provide you with education and assist you with any questions you may have.

About 38 million Americans (13% of the population) experience migraines, even more experience tension headaches frequently due to various causes. Migraines are headaches of varying intensity often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

Symptoms of a migraine include throbbing in one area that can vary in intensity. Nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are also common symptoms.

Treatments such as pain-relieving medications can be used to manage migraine pain. Tension headaches are mild to moderate pain often described as feeling like a tight band around the head. Symptoms include pain on both sides of the head that may be associated with muscle pain.

Treatments such as pain-relieving medications, ice or heat, and good posture can be used to manage tension headaches. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant known for its potential therapeutic effects.

Studies found that headache and migraine sufferers experienced positive results when taking CBD to treat their pain. The study compared CBD’s effects on migraines and headaches with those of popular pain medications, only to find that CBD is just as, if not more effective than an over the counter medication such as ibuprofen.

The same studies also found that regular CBD intake decreases the frequency of headaches and migraines, meaning that this cannabinoid has the potential to prevent this type of pain from occurring. What makes CBD unique is that it directly interacts with our endocannabinoid system by supplying it the things it needs to function at its best.

This interaction helps to regulate different bodily processes including inflammation and pain tolerance. CBD acts as both an analgesic and an anti-inflammatory aid. The chemical compounds found in CBD can reduce inflammation and the analgesic compounds are able to stop the brain from receiving pain signals sent by the nerves.

Our AHS 1500mg tincture can be taken sublingually. AHS tension rollers can be applied to the back of your neck, your temples, and behind your ear to alleviate pain along with our Vici migraine patches.

Always consult your primary care physician before starting a new treatment.

Our team of specialists are always available to provide you with education and assist you with any questions regarding CBD.

The National Institutes of Health estimates that roughly 30 percent of the general population suffers from sleep disruption, and approximately 10 percent have associated symptoms of daytime functional impairment consistent with the diagnosis of insomnia.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that consists of persistent problems falling and staying asleep. Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleep habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or prescribed medications. Insomnia is characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested. Treatment for insomnia consists of improving sleep habits, behavior therapy, identifying and treating underlying causes, prescribed medications, and sleep aid supplements.

Melatonin is one of the most popular supplements for sleep and typically comes in pill form. Melatonin is the sleep hormone produced by the brain in response to the dark. When the sun begins to set, the body clock tells the brain it is time to produce melatonin, the hormone that helps us relax, makes us feel drowsy and ultimately gets us to sleep. Melatonin is hindered by bright lights and triggered by darkness. That is the reason why sleeping in a dark room is the healthiest. Imbalances in the production of melatonin are often responsible for sleep disorders.

Two forms of melatonin exist in the general market. One is the natural form which comes from the pineal gland of animals. The other is a synthetic form following the same chemical pathway as natural melatonin. Synthetic melatonin is somewhat safer to use because it is free from biological contaminants. Natural sourced melatonin, on the other hand, may pose a risk to humans because it can be contaminated with animal diseases.

Melatonin also contains negative side effects which include headaches, dizziness, nausea, depression, tremors, anxiety, abdominal pain, irritability, confusion, and low blood pressure. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant known for its potential therapeutic effects.

Research shows that CBD may help alleviate insomnia without the negative side effects of prescribed medications or sleep aid supplements. CBD may affect sleep directly by interacting with receptors in the brain that govern the body’s daily sleep/wake cycles. CBD may also help alleviate insomnia by combating the causes of sleeplessness.

A common cause of insomnia is anxiety and stress. CBD helps regulate cortisol, a stress hormone, which has a significant impact on sleep cycles. Studies found that CBD is beneficial for anxiety-related disorders and an increase in sleep quality.

For those who struggle with sleeplessness due to chronic or acute pain, CBD offers a natural alternative to pharmaceutical pain relievers.

CBD helps reduce pain-induced sleeplessness by working on the symptoms themselves rather than providing a sedative effect like many sleep-aids.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use & Health, nearly 2 percent of Americans ages 12 and older have some sort of marijuana dependence and people who use marijuana before age 18 are 4 to 7 times more likely to develop this addiction than adults. Marijuana addiction is when a person feels withdrawal symptoms when not taking the drug.

People with marijuana dependence often report irritability, mooddifficulties, decreased appetite, insomnia, headaches, sweating, chills, anxiety and depression that peak within the first week after quitting and last up to 2 weeks.

Marijuana dependence occurs when the brain adapts to large amounts of the drug by reducing production of and sensitivity to its own endocannabinoid neurotransmitters. When marijuana is smoked, THC passes rapidly from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the substance to the brain and other organs throughout the body.

THC acts specifically on the brain cell’s cannabinoid receptors. These receptors are part of the neural communication network, called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays an important role in normal brain development and function. The highest density of cannabinoid receptors is found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, sensory, time perception, and coordinated movement.

Marijuana over-activates the ECS, causing the “high” and other effects that users experience, such as altered perceptions, altered mood, impaired coordination, difficulty thinking, difficulty problem solving, disrupted learning, memory issues and appetite changes. Marijuana use is associated with a range of health issues, particularly related to heart problems, lung problems and mental health conditions.

Frequent smokers can experience issues, such as daily cough, phlegm production, lung infections, damage to the immune system, damage to brain cells, damage to the central nervous system, fertility issues, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, depression, anxiety, personality disturbancesand lack of motivation.Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant known for its potential therapeutic effects.According to research CBD may alleviate the symptoms of marijuana withdrawals to help detoxing run smoothly.

CBD has shown promise in decreasing anxiety, improving sleep, improving cognitive function and having neuroprotective effects which may reverse some of the cognitive deficits associated with marijuana dependence. The mechanism of action for CBD has shown to be antagonistic to the psychoactive properties of THC in many locations within the central nervous system.

Such action suggests that it might be beneficial to use CBD to alleviate withdrawals of marijuana addiction. There are many CBD products that can help alleviate marijuana withdrawals. A 1500mg, 2000mg or 3000mg tincture can be taken sublingually to help with depression, headaches and insomnia.

Our AHS 1500mg or 2500mg custom cream can be applied topically to help with headaches and insomnia. 300mg CBD infused gummies and 1000mg CBD vape would work great for reducing anxiety and insomnia.

Always consult your primary care physician before starting a new treatment. Our team of specialists are always available to provide you with education and answer any questions regarding CBD.
