Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure is placed on the eye, causing inadequate fluid drainage. There are two main types of Glaucoma, primary and secondary. Primary Glaucoma is caused by the eye’s inability to drain through the filtration angles and is characterized by high pressure within the eye, dilated pupil, cloudy appearance in the eye, enlargement of the eye and vision loss.

Secondary Glaucoma is caused by eye infections and is characterized by inflammatory debris visible in the eye, constricted pupil, sticking of the iris to cornea or lens, headaches and loss of appetite. Treatment for Glaucoma in pets include different types of optical surgeries and prescribed medications.

Medications used to treat Canine Glaucoma include Betaxolol, Methazolamide, Pilocarpine, Latanoprost and Mannitol. Each prescribed medication contains negative side effects that include headache, dizziness, insomnia, gastrointestinal disturbance,tachypnea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased salivation, increased urination, coughing, and pulmonary edema.
