Anxiety is a common disorder affecting dogs worldwide and roughly 20 to 40 percent of dogs presented to veterinary specialists suffer from this disorder.

Dogs with anxiety often express their emotional distress in destructive, loud, and inconvenient ways. There are two main types of anxiety in dogs, situational and behavioral.

Situational anxiety occurs during unusual situations that prevent your pup from calming down. These can include thunderstorms, vet visits, car rides, fireworks or encounters with strangers.

Behavioral anxiety is a constant anxious feeling about something. Separation anxiety, for example, is one type of behavioral stress that many pet owners witness at home. These dogs tend to act up while you are gone due to the stress of being alone. Canine anxiety is characterized by pacing, panting, whimpering, trembling, aggression, loss of appetite, urination or defecation, nervous licking or chewing of the paws, excessive barking, and destructive behavior.

Treatment for anxious dogs include training, therapy, and prescribed medications. Prescribed medications include fluoxetine, clomipramine, and benzodiazepine. Each prescribed medication contains negative side effects that include insomnia, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, panting, whimpering, weight loss, seizures, aggression, dry mouth, constipation, difficulty urinating, lethargy, and fainting.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant known for its potential therapeutic effects. Studies show that CBD may help to alleviate the symptoms of canine anxiety without the harmful side effects of prescribed medication.

CBD works by traveling through the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a natural biological system present in all mammals, meaning that dogs and cats respond to CBD in much the same way as humans. Research suggests that CBD can stimulate specific serotonin receptors in the brain.

This temporary boost of the serotonin system can be greatly beneficial, helping reduce anxiety and fear, as well as improving mood in dogs.
